Muscles – health claims
Share
A human has over 600 muscles. On average, 40% of the total body weight is muscle in men and 35% in women. Muscles are needed for movement and the functioning of some organ systems. The single most important function of muscle is contraction, and muscle contraction is needed for all body movements, such as breathing, walking, and the beating of the heart.
There are three types of muscle tissue: smooth muscle, skeletal muscle, and cardiac muscle.
Smooth muscle is mainly found in the walls of internal organs, but there are also some discrete smooth muscles, such as the levator ani muscle. Voluntary movement of smooth muscle is not possible because its nervous system is autonomic.
Skeletal muscles are usually attached to bones by tendons. Skeletal muscles are voluntary, meaning they can be controlled by you. Skeletal muscles enable body movement.
Cardiac muscle, as its name suggests, is the muscle of the heart. Cardiac muscle is found only in the heart and its cells are connected to each other in a network-like structure. Cardiac muscle cells contract with the help of pacemaker cells, without nerves. Cardiac muscle can be considered an intermediate form between smooth muscle and skeletal muscle, as its structure resembles skeletal muscle, while it is very fatigue-resistant, as smooth muscle is.
